Outland Design Landscape Architecture Receives Applied Research Grant!

Outland Design is the recipient of an Applied Research Grant and will be working in partnership with Okanagan College and Maven Lane Childcare & Preschool Centre to examine the adaptation of traditional playgrounds and health benefits for children from early exposure to outdoor natural play spaces.

The goal for adapting traditional playgrounds will be to incorporate experiential play zones and specialized play equipment into children’s play spaces. As part of the study, the specialized equipment will be known as “loose parts”. Loose parts can be anything from pinecones to rocks and more, and stimulate a high level of creativity, imagination, and choice, with are endless possibilities as to how they can be used.

At the conclusion of the project, Outland Design will be the only western Canadian landscape architecture firm qualified in a unique outdoor assessment tool and on methods for the adaptation of traditional playgrounds.

Outland’s training on the assessment tool has already begun! An introductory workshop was hosted and attended by regional Early Education professionals at Okanagan College’s Vernon campus. In the spring of 2015, a regional symposium will be held in Vernon, BC to promote outdoor natural play. The symposium will include a demonstration project, where outdoor natural play prototypes developed by Outland Design will be tested by children.
