Newgate Apartments Recieves Gold LEED Certification!

Newgate Apartments, located in the Rutland area of Kelowna, has received gold LEED certification! The four storey, forty-nine unit building is a low income supportive housing complex for adult men and women at risk of homelessness who require some support to maintain their housing.

Outland Design worked closely with the John Howard Society & BC Housing, along with the prime consultant Meiklejohn Architects Inc., to create a functional & vibrant space for this site. Outland produced a concept plan for the project and through design development produced comprehensive landscape construction drawings that stayed within the client’s budgetary constraints. The drawings detailed a number of custom site furniture pieces including fencing, a concrete seat wall and bike storage shed.

Outland was involved throughout the LEED certification process and prepared a site plan that was used to outline hardscape coverage, planting areas, and tree shade within five years. Using grey-cement concrete as the main hard-surface material (recommended to be power-washed annually to restore its original reflectivity), planting numerous large-canopy trees adjacent to impervious surfaces, and incorporating a large area of soft landscaping for the site, contributed to the gold LEED rating by providing a high percentage of both reflective materials and shade coverage in the summer months.
